Scenic mountain drive to Bhutan's capital, with a tea stop at the Chukha viewpoint. On arrival, a short city tour to get a feel for Bhutanese life and culture. Overnight in Thimphu.

Cross the Dochula Pass (3,150 m) with views of snow-capped Himalayan peaks on clear days. Visit Chimi Lhakhang, the temple of fertility, with a glimpse of rural farm life, and the grand Punakha Dzong at the meeting of the Mo Chhu and Pho Chhu rivers. After lunch, walk the Punakha suspension bridge. Overnight in Punakha.

Drive to Paro via Dochula Pass, stopping at Tachogang, the riverside, Dungtse Lhakhang, Ta Dzong (National Museum) and Rinpung Dzong, followed by a Paro town tour. Overnight in Paro.

Optional hike to the Tiger's Nest (Taktsang) Monastery, a demanding walk of about 5 hours, or a drive up to Chele La Pass at about 4,000 m. Overnight in Paro.
